Family Vineyards Pinot Noir, Newton Johnson

£34.95
This family farm was founded in the mid-1990s by Cape Wine Master, Dave Johnson and his wife, Felicity (Née Newton) and within the past twenty years has built a reputation for producing some of the Cape’s best Pinot Noir. Dave’s CWM thesis was on the variety. Add to that one of South Africa’s smartest Chardonnay’s and, more recently a pair of outstanding Rhône style wines. Right from the outset, Dave and Felicity’s offspring were involved and today it is very much Gordon, partnered by his wife, Nadia, who are responsible for the winemaking, with brother Bevan looking after the commercial side. This is always my favourite South African Pinot Noir, it just has beautiful purity of fruit and perfect balance; some richness but with bright and juicy acidity. It never fails to deliver. This will age and improve for up to 10 years but is delicious now. One of the New World's best and for a wine of this quality, the price is incredible (compare to Burgundy or California!) Great with roast lamb or pork, grilled chops, fillet steak, venison...any special meal!

‘Carte Noire’ NV, Champagne Jean-Paul Deville

Chateau Grand Pey Lescours, St. Emilion Grand Cru

£28.95
Acquired in 1924 by the Escure family, the Château Grand-Pey-Lescours is located at the foot of the slopes of Saint-Emilion itself. They also own the renowned Chateau Bellegrave in Pomerol. The vineyards are planted with 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon – on gravelly and sandy soils and cover nearly 26 hectares. A classic example of St.Emilion; medium-bodied, wood-scented with notes of plum and the perfect accompaniment to roast lamb!

Rioja Reserva 2006, Bodegas Urbina

£26.95
A family-run estate that practises organic methods. The bodega is situated in Cuzcurrita de Río Tirón, on the north-western edge of Rioja. Four generations of the family have dedicated themselves to the cultivation of their vineyards and the production of wine. Their sole objective, the production of quality wines, has been achieved as the result of careful viticulture using traditional techniques, harvesting by hand and avoiding the use of weed killers and pesticides. The 2006 Reserva Especial contains Tempranillo, Mazuelo and Graziano and has more complex, caramelised aromas. The maturity of this wine really sets it apart from other Riojas and is a steal at this price. With the oak and fruit flavours fully integrating, this is deliciously smooth and really quite special. Drink with grilled lamb...

Here, John and Nicole Bojanowski make some of the region's most interesting wines. The Carignan vines that make this wine are from a high gravelly vineyard and are over 100 years old. This gives the wine real character, as if the vines have soaked up the minerals of the earth and the flavours of the surrounding Garrigue. This is a dark, powerful wine that is a perfect match for slow roasted, herby meats. Unique and beautiful, this is Southern French wine at it's best.

Ceresuolo di Vittoria, Gulfi, Sicily

£24.95
A 50/50 blend of Nero d'Avola and Frappato di Vittoria, which were replanted by Gulfi and trained according to the traditional Alberello system. The Nero d'Avola is harvested at the end of September and Frappato in the first week of October. The two varieties are fermented separately, with a short maceration on the skins. After fermentation, the wines are blended and bottled after two months. Ceresulo refers to the vibrant colour and perfume of the wines, with cherries bursting from the glass. Frappato is light, perfumed and light on tannins while Nero d'Avola is richer and more full-bodied. Together they make a really interesting style of wine and Gulfi's is one of the best examples. A delicious wine that suits outdoor eating; grilled meats from the bbq are perfect, as are cold meats and cheeses.
