‘Babone’, Muralia

£19.95

Chiara and Stefano Casali, the hosts, fell in love with all this in 1997, and turned this love into the adventure of their lives, with the clear idea of making a wine that would simply interpret the gifts of the land.

This fully organic winery produces great wines! All very well made and balanced with food in mind. Hand made, artisan wines at sensible prices.

Blending Sangiovese with Syrah is a trend that is really taking hold in Tuscany, with many top estates in Chianti and Montalcino producing interesting results. The Babone shows why this blend works, Sangiovese gives that lovely spicy cherry flavour and the Syrah adds a bit more dark fruit depth.

Obviously this wine goes very well with steaks and roasts but also meaty pasta sauces and hard, strong cheeses.

Redoma Tinto, Niepoort

Portugal, Red Wine
£39.95
The Redoma wines are perhaps the flagship of Dirk Niepoort's range. The Tinto is rich and full-bodied with layers of dark fruit flavour and complex spice. 2017 was such a fantastic vintage for Niepoort, the wine is approachable now, but having tried older vintages over the years, it will definitely repay some years in the bottle. Perfect with the full roast beef dinner, or something gamey like venison stew.

Astrolabe Marlborough Pinot Noir

New Zealand, Red Wine
£25.95
Simon Waghorn of Astrolabe Wines is one of New Zealand's most respected winemakers; his wines are always balanced, with great depth of flavour. This Pinot Noir has more complexity than many from Marlborough, with a subtle savoury edge to the rich creamy red fruit flavours. Delicious with rack of lamb or soft cheeses such as Baron Bigod.

Frankland Estate Shiraz

Australia, Red Wine
£18.95
Buried deep in the heart of Western Australia's most isolated wine region (250km east of Margaret River and inland from the wild and picturesque Great Southern coastline), Frankland Estate is as much a part of its natural landscape as it is a winery.Barrie Smith and Judi Cullam co-founded Frankland Estate in 1988, after deciding to diversify their long-established wool-growing interests in the Frankland River region. Barrie's unparalleled experience in production is owed to having been raised among vineyards, as well as to over 30 years of farming. He is renowned for his intimate knowledge and deep respect for the land, and for his firm belief in the winemaking potential of the Isolation Ridge vineyard.Very much a tight-knit family affair, their children, Hunter and Elizabeth Smith, and their families live on the estate, too. The family have invested a lot of time and energy into minimising their impact on the ecological balance of the region, nurturing the micro-biology of the soils and supporting causes to improve the health and future prosperity of the local fauna and flora. It is their commitment to sustainable farming that informs their winemaking practices. This Shiraz/Syrah is very Rhonesque, with lovely dark fruit and a kick of pepper. Some bottle age has given the wine real depth and complexity; this really is a cracking wine for the price. Very Delicious.Great with grilled meats. BBQ sausages and ribs would be perfect.

‘Segna de Cor’, Domaine le Roc des Anges

France, Red Wine
£19.95
Deep in the Roussillon countryside, close to the Spanish border, Marjorie Gallet makes some truly wonderful wines. The Vineyards have very poor crumbly schist soils which encourage the very old vines to form deep root systems. All the work here is done organically and by hand and the result of this care and attention to detail is plain to see here. Segna de Cor (blood of the Earth) is a blend of Grenache, Carignan & Syrah which really expresses the land it comes from; you can imagine being in the wild, rocky vineyards, breathing in the aromas of wild herbs and then imagine a spit roast lamb with rosemary and thyme. Meaty, rich and delicious. Proper wine!

Chateauneuf-du-Pape ‘Les Safres’, Le Clos du Caillou’

France, Red Wine
£48.00
The much-lauded Le Clos du Caillou produces classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines that just keep getting better, year-on-year. The domaine is situated on the edge of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and is unique in that, in 1936, the owner (who was then away at a hunting retreat) refused to allow the experts who were drawing up the boundaries of the appellation to visit his domaine. Thus, it was not included in the delimited area and remains to this day an enclave within the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. The domaine practices biodynamic farming techniques and was certified "Agriculture Biologique" in 2010 and "Vin Biologique" in 2012. Their trademark style lies in full-bodied wines with rich red fruit flavours, velvety texture and fine tannins.Les Safres is 95% Grenache with the rest Mourvedre, Cinsault & Vaccarese. Not too heavy for a Chateauneuf but great intensity of pure spicy dark fruit. Really impressive.

Tolpuddle Pinot Noir

Wine, Australia, Red Wine
£66.00
The Tolpuddle vineyard was purchased by Martin Shaw and Michael Hill Smith in 2011. It is situated in the Coal River Valley, in Tasmania’s south-east corner. First planted in 1988 by Tony Jordan and Garry Crittenden, it has since established a reputation for growing exceptional quality grapes, with the focus on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The cool but relatively dry climate allows the grapes to ripen slowly in autumn, without the disease pressure that heavy rainfall can bring. The vineyard took its name from the Tolpuddle Martyrs, who were transported to Australia in 1834 for starting an agrarian union in Tolpuddle in Dorset. The leader of the group, George Loveless, served part of his sentence working on a property near Richmond called GlenAyr, part of which is now the Tolpuddle Vineyard. This is certainly one of Australia's best Pinot Noirs with this vintage rated 99/100 on jamessuckling.com. Elegant and balanced but with great complexity and depth. Stunning wine! Perfect Pinot for a special occasion. On my list for Christmas Day this year!

Fleurie ‘Les Moriers’, Domaine Chignard

France, Red Wine
£21.00
Domaine Chignard was founded by Michel Chignard and is now run by his son Cédric. Chignard farms 8 hectares of old vines in Fleurie, situated at the top of the hill sloping down to Moulin-à-Vent and on pure granitic soils. The wines are elegant but serious and concentrated expressions of the terroir, none more so than the 'Les Moriers' lieu-dit. Cédric is following in his father's footsteps and continuing the traditional Beaujolais way of farming and winemaking with a high proportion of whole bunch and using a mix of cement, old foudre and stainless steel during vinification. Like his father`s wines, Cédric`s Fleuries are intensely aromatic and complex with an energy, finesse and depth rarely found in other wines from Fleurie. The perfect wine to go with a plate of cheese and charcuterie...
