Rioja Reserva 2006, Bodegas Urbina
£26.95
A family-run estate that practises organic methods.
The bodega is situated in Cuzcurrita de Río Tirón, on the north-western edge of Rioja.
Four generations of the family have dedicated themselves to the cultivation of their vineyards and the production of wine.
Their sole objective, the production of quality wines, has been achieved as the result of careful viticulture using traditional techniques, harvesting by hand and avoiding the use of weed killers and pesticides.
The 2006 Reserva Especial contains Tempranillo, Mazuelo and Graziano and has more complex, caramelised
aromas. The maturity of this wine really sets it apart from other Riojas and is a steal at this price. With the oak and fruit flavours fully integrating, this is deliciously smooth and really quite special.

Fleurie ‘Les Moriers’, Domaine Chignard
£22.95
Domaine Chignard was founded by Michel Chignard and is now run by his son Cédric. Chignard farms 8 hectares of old vines in Fleurie, situated at the top of the hill sloping down to Moulin-à-Vent and on pure granitic soils. The wines are elegant but serious and concentrated expressions of the terroir, none more so than the 'Les Moriers' lieu-dit. Cédric is following in his father's footsteps and continuing the traditional Beaujolais way of farming and winemaking with a high proportion of whole bunch and using a mix of cement, old foudre and stainless steel during vinification. Like his father`s wines, Cédric`s Fleuries are intensely aromatic and complex with an energy, finesse and depth rarely found in other wines from Fleurie.
The perfect wine to go with a plate of cheese and charcuterie...
Chateau Lucas
£21.95
Lussac is an up and coming satellite appellation of the renowned Saint Emilion region on the the Right Bank of Bordeaux. There is no doubt that one of Lussac's most prized properties is Château Lucas, owned by the Vauthier family of Château Ausone fame. From just 18 hectares of vines, three cuvée are produced. The top wine, aptly called Château Lucas, is produced from a 12-hectare vineyard, comprising equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Franc. While so much of the Right Bank focuses on Merlot, the high percentage of Cabernet Franc brings a polished lift to the cuvée, vintage in and vintage out.
A classic partner for roast lamb.
Fleurie, Didier Desvignes
£18.95
Didier Desvignes is a winemaker who really epitomises the spirit of Beaujolais; he believes in treating the land with respect and nurturing each vineyard parcel to express its full potential. Everything is done by hand and farmed using organic treatments. The Gamay vines he has in Fleurie are on unique pink granite soils and make a wine of great purity and vibrancy. There are vivid aromas of violets and flavours of crushed wild strawberries and a herbal, savoury edge which makes it so good with charcuterie. You could be in a Paris wine bar, sipping natural wine and enjoying fine charcuterie, or you could be doing exactly the same at No2 Pound Street!
Vina Ilusion Rioja, Plaza Medina
£13.95
Ilusion is a project brought to life by Martín Alonso and Gloria Plaza in the Rioja Baja sub-zone of the region.
Here, in their chalky, iron laced clay soils at around 700m of altitude, the two organically farm their 5 hectares with the utmost care
according to the Fukuoka (author of “One Straw Revolution”) method. While it has been called “do nothing farming” for the
lack of additions (neither chemical nor organic fertilizer) and general outlook that healthy cultivation is more about long-term
planning and careful observation than it is about attempting to micromanage and control agriculture, Fukuoka farming has
become trendy with some very respectable vignerons.
Way before this came to pass, and before current luminaries such as Michael Pollan namechecked him, Alonso travelled to Japan nearly 30 years ago to learn from Fukuoka himself. Farming ideology aside, we should mention that this wine is a delicious, gulpable expression of Rioja: full of mixed berries and red fruits, juicy, delightful to drink.
A great party red, and a guaranteed crowd pleaser!

Reserve de Gassac Rose, Mas de Daumas Gassac

Based in the hot Languedoc region in the south of France, the Guibert family has fabulous vineyards with a unique, cool microclimate. This is a blend of Grenache, Syrah and Carignan.
