Cotes du Rhone ‘Nature’ Rouge, Famille Perrin
£17.95
The Perrin family are perhaps the most famous in the Rhone Valley. They started farming organically in 1950 at Château de Beaucastel with the strong belief that it helps to express the sense of place in the finished wine.
The nose has lovely notes of red and black fruits coupled with spicy, peppery notes. The tannins are ripe and plush, giving the wine excellent structure. Notes of blackcurrant and white pepper linger on the finish.
Great with stews and roasts. Hearty fare!

Barbaresco, ‘Rabaja’, Bruno Rocca, Piemonte, Italy – organic
£82.00
Starting in 1978, Bruno Rocca has risen through the ranks to be considered one of the very best producers in Piemonte. He makes wine in a modern, rich style but with the balance and harmony that always comes with great winemaking. The hill, or Cru, of Rabaja is one of the most highly prized sites in Barabresco, producing wines of amazing complexity and ageing potential. A truly great wine that combines the beautiful perfume of the best Nebbiolo with the richness and power that comes from this special place.
Drinking well now, this will develop complexity over the next 20 years.
Great with strong, hard cheese, as well as pasta and meat dishes (especially with mushrooms or a hint of truffle!).
Sesti Brunello di Montalcino 2019
£79.00
Sesti are widely considered one of the finest producers of Brunello di Montalcino, situated at the stunningly beautiful Castello di Argiano. Guiseppi Sesti and his daughter Elisa make an elegant, beguiling style of Brunello; less oaky and tannic than many others. Perfect with any hearty meat dishes, or pasta with meat sauces – Lasagne would be a great match.
Amarone, Musella
£49.95
Musella make very special wines! What makes them unique is that they look for harmony and balance in the wine, not just power and intensity. Don't get me wrong, this is still a full-bodied wine, made with dried grapes in the usual way, but it isn't too intense or too alcoholic like a lot of modern Amarone. This is deliciously drinkable; more than one glass won't knock you out! Maddalena Pasqua is passionate about her vineyards and the land on which she lives; she makes wines that shine with this love. All the vineyards and farmed Biodynamically and the wines made by hand.
A great wine to finish the meal and can accompany a range of cheeses including complex Cheddars such as Montgomery or Pitchfork, or soft blues like Beauvale.
Semillion, Botanica, Stellenbosch, South Africa – Organic
£26.50
Tiny production Semillon from Ginny Povall at Botanica Wines based near Stellenbosch, South Africa. Ginny is a self-taught winemaker from New York; sounds ominous but she is now regarded as one of the top winemakers in the Cape. This Semillon has lovely, lemony flavours with a delicate waxy texture and a hint of toast on the finish. Different and delicious; perfect with sushi or other light fish dishes.
Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, Cataldi Madonna – Organic
£17.95
One of Abruzzo’s top producers, Cataldi Madonna makes wines with great balance; the grapes and vineyards are allowed to express themselves without layers of oak. This Montepulciano is refreshingly medium-bodied, deliciously palatable and very moreish. It will complement your meal rather than dominate it – a quality I always look for in great wine.
Great with charcuterie, herby lamb, meaty pasta dishes and hard sheep cheeses such as Spenwood.
Zinfandel ‘Heritage’, De Loach
£16.95
De Loach was founded in 1973 by San Francisco Firefighter Cecil De Loach. The estate was later taken over by Burgundian Jean-Charles Boisset, who has converted all their vineyards to organic and bodynamic practices.
This wine is unusual in that it presents great Californian wine at a sensible price, usually there is the mass-produced stuff at the bottom end of the market and then a big jump to the premium £30+ end. This is a great wine at a great price. Medium/full-bodied with loads of juicy bramble fruit and smooth, velvety tannins. A crowd-pleaser and a great pizza or BBQ wine.
Soave Classico, Monte Tondo, Veneto, Italy
£15.95
Beautiful, elegant Soave from a great, family-run, organic estate in the volcanic hills of Veneto. The grape variety here is Garganega, and this is an expression with great precision of flavour. Unoaked, light and elegant, it is a very versatile food wine; a great match for all light pasta dishes, salads or simply grilled fish.
‘Hecula’ Monastrell, Castano, Yecla
£12.95
Based in Yecla, Familia Castaño is known for its huge efforts to promote one of Spain’s native varieties: Monastrell. Castaño embodies the best of what southern Spain has to offer, producing rich, warm-climate wines, with almost Syrah-like complexity, which overdeliver in terms of value year after year. Castaño began bottling characterful, single-varietal Monastrell in the 1980s, when the variety was used exclusively for bulk wines and blending. Today, in the expert hands of Daniel Castaño and his family, the variety maintains high quality even at moderate to generous yields. 80% of the family’s 600 hectares of vineyards are dedicated to Monastrell, with smaller plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Macabeo and Chardonnay among others. This is a big, rich, full-bodied wine made from the Monastrell grape in the Yecla region of south west Spain. Really over-delivers for the price; so tasty! Has always been one of our favourites, and now it's certified organic! Win WinA great steak wine, but also just one of the best all-round wines on the market. Seriously good.
