Friuli Sauvignon, Fondo Indizeno

£17.95

Fondo Indizeno is a new project from renowned winemaker Christian Patat, one of Friuli’s most faithful advocates and a man who has done so much to promote this area. Fondo Indizeno’s vineyards are spread over three villages in the Colli Orientali del Friuli, which were chosen due to their excellent quality terroir; Buttrio, Prepotto and Premariacco. They works with 15 hectares of very old vines, between 30-40 years, planted on marl based soils (locally known as “Ponca”). The vines benefit from a Mediterranean climate, with continental influences, hot summers, cold winters and dry autumns. The vineyards are planted with Ribolla Gialla, Chardonnay, Friulano, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Bianco and Malvasia.

The idea of this project is an introduction to Friuli’s best wines, to showcase the quality achievable and the area’s potential. Each wine is dedicated to a producer whose wines have brought prestige to a particular grape variety, for example Ribolla Gialla is named after Stanko Radikon, who spent his life promoting this variety. While Chardonnay is dedicated to Nicola Manferrari who is one of the best interpreters of this grape.  As with all Christians wines, they are impeccably executed, expressive styles, which are exemplary of Friulian wine and really showcase this areas potential.

This is a food-friendly example of Sauvignon Blanc, less of the intense nettle and gooseberry flavour and more subtle, herbal notes.
A really refreshing take on the grape; here it’s all about balance and creating a wine that will enhance your meal, not stamp all over it!

Delicious with sushi, or simple grilled white fish. It would also work well with seared tuna steak.

Sauvignon Blanc, Framingham

White Wine
£18.95
Framingham has been named winery of the year by The Real Review (New Zealand’s top wine publication) for the last two years. They make stunning wines! This Sauvignon is a little bit different to most, with the wine seeing extra skin contact and some ageing in old barrels; this gives the wine a lovely texture and a savoury edge alongside those classic Sauvignon flavours. A very ‘food-friendly’ version of Kiwi Savvy Blanc!

Muscadet Sevre et Maine Sur Lie, Domaine de la Pepiere

France, White Wine
£16.95
Marc Ollivier of Domaine de la Pépière is an example of a winemaker who has grown with his vines. In the early 1980’s Marc, who was an engineer at the time, decided to move to the country for a slower pace of life. His father owned some vineyards in the cool Atlantic-influenced zone of Muscadet-Sèvre et Maine but was not a winemaker. Marc took over his father’s vineyards and bought a parcel called Clos de Briords from an elderly neighbour. Marc’s first vintage was 1985 and his primary goal as a winemaker at the time was to simply complete fermentation. As such, he began fermentation using cultured yeasts and finished the wine off with a dose of SO2. As Marc matured as a winemaker, he experimented with ambient yeasts and began bottling with minimal amounts of SO2. The results were extraordinary; the wines showed greater depth, richness and complexity. Encouraged by his success, Marc began transitioning all his vineyards to organic and continued his minimalist approach in the winery. His racy, lemon-tinged, mineral-driven Muscadets have since become the benchmark for the region and have opened up a world of previously unknown potential in the area. Marc’s success is combination of good fortune (his vineyards were never touched by wine consultants encouraging new, higher yield clones) and an open minded, experimental approach to making the best possible wines. Many of Marc’s vines are 40+ years old and some of his vineyards are planted on granite soils, a rarity in the region. All the vineyards are from original stock: Ollivier is the only grower in the Muscadet who does not have a single clonal selection in his vineyards. He also hand harvests (a rarity in the region) and uses only natural yeasts for fermentation. Extended lees contact, often till April or May of the following year, adds added depth to the wines, The Muscadet from Pepière is an excellent example. The wine is lemony, stony and bracing on the palate.Excellent with shellfish dishes, especially oysters!

Soave Classico, Monte Tondo

Italy, White Wine
£15.95

Monte Tondo is a family estate located in the beautiful hillside vineyards of Soave. Here the soils range from volcanic to chalky, which alongside the varying microclimates, gives the wines distinct flavour characteristics and individualistic style.

Alongside his family, winemaker Gino Magnabosco is part of the third generation to run the estate. They believe that hard work, drive, and determination are key to obtaining the best results from their land. Maintaining, nourishing, and cherishing the land of their ancestors is of utmost importance. And although not certified, they farm using organic practices and an environmentally friendly approach to both viticulture and vinification. No chemicals are used in their production and they recycle everything excess coming from the vineyard (stems as fertilizers, skins for grappa, pruned branches for heating and fertilizer).

Small proportions of other varieties are allowed in the production of Soave, but Monte Tondo focus their concentration purely on Garganega. Garganega is a variety so versatile and easily culinary matched but also with the ability to produce complex wines with age-ability.

A very good example of Soave at a very good price. This over-delivers.. Perfect with salads and light fish and shellfish dishes.

Chablis, Gerard Tremblay

France, White Wine
£21.95
Gérard Tremblay and his wife, Hélène, oversee a domain that they inherited in a line of five generations, but which they have mostly built themselves. With 80 acres of vines under production, most of them in the best Premier Cru and Grand Cru appellations, their list of Chablis is among the most prestigious in the region. Their wines are mostly sold direct from the winery, or are snapped up by top restaurants, they don't often appear for retail. This wine has all the hallmarks of great Chablis, clean and minerally but with a depth and length of flavour that lets you know you're dealing with serious a winemaker here. Perfect with shellfish..how about a lobster salad? Or big garlicy prawns? Oh yes please!
