Gevrey Chambertin Vieilles Vignes, Heresztyn-Mazzini 2012
£56.00
An estate founded by a former Polish vineyard worker of Louis Trapet. Domaine Heresztyn has been one of the
consistently fine producers in Gevrey Chambertin. However, as Florence Heresztyn increasingly takes the reins, they have clearly reached another level of quality. The vineyard is now undergoing conversion to biodynamic viticulture. As Clive Coates remarks: “Now they are amongst the top in the village: elegant, composed, full of fruit, full of definition. A major address these days.” These are wonderful glossy precocious wines with eloquent cherry and bilberry fruit and a certain stoniness that betokens good ageing potential. Plenty of energy, vinosity and concentration here.
This Gevrey-Chambertin vieilles vignes from 50-year-old parcels planted on deep limestone-clay soils is a firm favourite. The nose is expansive, yielding aromas of strawberry, blackcurrant and violet and the mouth is sensual with pure fruit flavours lingering on the tongue.
A great wine showing some mature, developed flavours; perfect with duck or Baron Bigod cheese!

Valpolicella, Alpha-Zeta
Alpha Zeta was started in 1999 to produce a range of modern, fruit-driven wines from the hills outside Verona. Leading New Zealand winemaker Matt Thomson works with growers (rather than buy bulk wine, which is standard among most wines from Verona at this price) to obtain ripe grapes (by reducing yields and picking later) and then, using Matt’s expertise, preserve these flavours in the finished wines. This has resulted in wines that offer great value, quality, balance and typicity.
The Valpolicella has bright, black cherry fruit and velvety tannins; a delicious wine that is perfect with pizza and light pasta dishes.

Lion’s Tooth Shiraz/Riesling, Dandelion Vineyards
Dandelion Vineyards is the venture of self-titled ‘typist’ Zar Brooks and his winemaking wife Elena, with wines made from the Barossa and Eden Valleys, Fleurieu, the Adelaide Hills and McLaren Vale.
Nick Stock, one of Australia’s leading journalists, has described Dandelion as follows: “Brooks has teamed up with his winemaking wife Elena, a woman whose talents are outweighed only by her tolerance, in an exciting new venture called Dandelion Vineyards. The approach is remarkably simple and sees Elena making wine from a suite of beautiful old vineyards across that blessed curve that runs from the Barossa, up through the Eden Valley and Adelaide Hills and down into McLaren Vale.”
From this vineyard, Elena co-ferments an almost forgotten but timeless blend of Shiraz and Riesling to enhance the wine's perfume and palate. This has always been one of our most popular wines, year after year it delivers amazing value for money. Rich and intense, it is impressive without being too much. There is balance which makes it very, very drinkable.
