Grecanico Dorato, Mandrarossa, Sicily

£13.95

The Mandrarossa wines come from a selection of the best sites from Cantine Settesoli’s 6,000 hectares of vineyard, situated in southwestern Sicily and planted with 32 different grape varieties. The vineyards are split between the 2,000 members of the co-op, and cover the area around Selinunte, the hauntingly beautiful ruins of a Greek town founded 2,600 years ago. Cantine Settesoli helps to support the restoration of this archaeological site.

First produced in 1999, Mandrarossa has opened its own winery in 2021, a completely sustainable winery fed by solar panels and well integrated with the surrounding hills. The winery has increasingly focused on single-site wines, as it was conceived after the diverse soils of the vineyards were mapped, enabling the winemakers to focus on what were then ranked their best sites.

The nose is complex, with notes of orange blossom and citrus fruit with a hint of thyme. The palate is fresh and zesty with good minerality and great finish.

A great salad/garden wine, light fish dishes, garlicky prawns etc…

Tolpuddle Pinot Noir

Wine, Australia, Red Wine
£69.00
The Tolpuddle vineyard was purchased by Martin Shaw and Michael Hill Smith in 2011. It is situated in the Coal River Valley, in Tasmania’s south-east corner. First planted in 1988 by Tony Jordan and Garry Crittenden, it has since established a reputation for growing exceptional quality grapes, with the focus on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The cool but relatively dry climate allows the grapes to ripen slowly in autumn, without the disease pressure that heavy rainfall can bring. The vineyard took its name from the Tolpuddle Martyrs, who were transported to Australia in 1834 for starting an agrarian union in Tolpuddle in Dorset. The leader of the group, George Loveless, served part of his sentence working on a property near Richmond called GlenAyr, part of which is now the Tolpuddle Vineyard. This is certainly one of Australia's best Pinot Noirs with this vintage rated 99/100 on jamessuckling.com. Elegant and balanced but with great complexity and depth. Stunning wine! Perfect Pinot for a special occasion. On my list for Christmas Day this year!

Friuli Sauvignon, Fondo Indizeno

Italy, White Wine
£17.95
Fondo Indizeno is a new project from renowned winemaker Christian Patat, one of Friuli’s most faithful advocates and a man who has done so much to promote this area. Fondo Indizeno's vineyards are spread over three villages in the Colli Orientali del Friuli, which were chosen due to their excellent quality terroir; Buttrio, Prepotto and Premariacco. They works with 15 hectares of very old vines, between 30-40 years, planted on marl based soils (locally known as “Ponca”). The vines benefit from a Mediterranean climate, with continental influences, hot summers, cold winters and dry autumns. The vineyards are planted with Ribolla Gialla, Chardonnay, Friulano, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Bianco and Malvasia. The idea of this project is an introduction to Friuli’s best wines, to showcase the quality achievable and the area's potential. Each wine is dedicated to a producer whose wines have brought prestige to a particular grape variety, for example Ribolla Gialla is named after Stanko Radikon, who spent his life promoting this variety. While Chardonnay is dedicated to Nicola Manferrari who is one of the best interpreters of this grape.  As with all Christians wines, they are impeccably executed, expressive styles, which are exemplary of Friulian wine and really showcase this areas potential. This is a food-friendly example of Sauvignon Blanc, less of the intense nettle and gooseberry flavour and more subtle, herbal notes. A really refreshing take on the grape; here it's all about balance and creating a wine that will enhance your meal, not stamp all over it!Delicious with sushi, or simple grilled white fish. It would also work well with seared tuna steak.

Gavi ‘La Fornace’, Cinzia Bergaglio

Italy, White Wine
£14.95
This is one of our favourite wines; it's Gavi that isn't overpriced! Bergaglio is situated in Tassarolo, in the heart of the Gavi zone (it could be called Gavi di Gavi...), in the south of Piemonte heading towards Liguria. Cortese is the grape here, and this version has all the herb-scented freshness and juicy, citrus fruit you could hope for. Not a complicated wine, or one that should be revered and sipped in silence; it should be served with great food and drunk heartily with a big grin on your face! The perfect wine to have with fennel-stuffed seabass doused with really good olive oil. Yum..

‘Chiaraluna’ Viognier, Muralia

Muralia is a beautiful organic winery in the Maremma region of Tuscany, owned and run by Stefano Casali, who is an absolute perfectionist when it comes to wine! This is a very elegant Viognier, with clean, pure stone fruit flavours and without the heaviness that sometimes comes with that grape. One of the best expressions of Viognier I've ever tasted (from anywhere!).Absolutely delicious with poached salmon or lobster.

Finca Suarez Chardonnay

Wine, Argentina, White Wine
£22.95
The Suarez family connection with Paraje Altamira goes way back. Juanfa Suarez' great grandfather, Leopoldo, bought the finca in 1920 and established an experimental winery for varietal micro-vinifications. Leopoldo's son started planting in earnest in the 1960s and made good quality bulk wine for the domestic market, but the economic crisis that ensued commoditised wine in a way that made it commercially non-viable and he was forced to plant apples, pears and other fruits instead. The finca stayed in family hands and Juanfa's father finally returned the land to vines in the 1990s, initially just to sell the grapes. Today, most of the fruit (around 80%) is sold to other producers and Juanfa uses his best plots to make his own wines. His first vintage was 2013 and in a short space of time his wines have emerged as being really rather special.

Simply one of the best Argentine Chardonnays we’ve ever tasted, this stunning, under-stated wine is verging on ethereal. The nose is fresh and delicate with notes of apple blossom, peach and mandarin and just the faintest suggestion of oak. The palate is pristine and precise, tidy and stylish. The amazing fruit quality at Juanfa’s disposal, the complete lack of malolactic fermentation and the fact that only 15% of the wine is aged in French barrels for 12 months, makes for a wine that is simultaneously lean and luscious.

A great roast chicken wine. Or Turkey. Or any number of fish dishes. Creamy sauces. Pork Chops. All would be great matches.

Etna Rosso ‘Passorosso’, Passopisciaro, Sicily

Italy
£39.95
Passopisciaro is one of the leading producers in Sicily; their wines really have something special about them. The grape here is Nerello Mascalese and on Etna's volcanic soils it makes wines of beguiling perfume and style. This is not a heavy, full-bodied wine but like Barolo and Barbaresco, there is a structure that gives them stature and a sense of import. This wine can stand up to rich stews and game dishes but really shines with a couple of simple hard cheeses; try it with Corra Lin or Lincolnshire Poacher
