Meursault ‘Cuvee Jean’, Jean Javillier
£57.00
Very good Meursault from this organic producer. Typical oatmeal notes and some richness but ageing in older oak gives less aggressive toastiness than with some growers.
Elegant and classy; the perfect foil for grilled sole or turbot (or other nice fish!)

Chateau Grand Pey Lescours, St. Emilion Grand Cru
£28.95
Acquired in 1924 by the Escure family, the Château Grand-Pey-Lescours is located at the foot of the slopes of Saint-Emilion itself. They also own the renowned Chateau Bellegrave in Pomerol. The vineyards are planted with 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon – on gravelly and sandy soils and cover nearly 26 hectares.
A classic example of St.Emilion; medium-bodied, wood-scented with notes of plum and the perfect accompaniment to roast lamb!
Sancerre ‘La Vignes Blanche’, Henri Bourgeois
£25.95
Alvarinho ‘Granit’, Soalheiro, Vinho Verde
£23.95
100% Alvarinho (same as Albarino over the border in Spain)
Qunita do Soalheiro are the benchmark producer of Alvarinho. Based in the Vinho Verde region, their wines are a league above other producers; more elegant and complex. This particular bottling, named 'Granit' after the soils in this vineyard, is my favourite; a rich, complex expression of the grape with a lovely mineral texture and a very long, pure finish.
A little bit similar to really good 1er Cru Chablis, this is perfect with things like grilled white fish with lemon and olive oil or shellfish (lobster salad would be sublime).
Something a bit different but truly World class. You won't be disappointed.
Pouilly-Fume ‘Pierre-Louis’, Domaine Landrat-Guyollot
£23.95
St. Chinian ‘La Laouzil’, Thierry Navarre
£18.95
Carignan/Grenache/Syrah
Thierry Navarre has a dozen hectares of vines planted on dark brown schist terraces around Roquebrun. The achingly beautiful countryside is an amphitheatre of small mountains clad in a sea of green, a forest of small trees and bushes and the familiar clumps of fragrant rosemary and thyme which captures the scented spirit of the high Languedoc. The culture in the vines revolves around the respect for the soil, the cycles, the seasons. No chemical products are used, simply composting, natural preparation, plant infusions and working the soil. The harvest is manual and carried out by a small team.
This wine is full of red fruits, liquorice tones and plenty of herbs and spice, yet is unforced, supple and fresh.
A proper southern French wine to accompany roast lamb or great with some good sausages or a hearty stew.
Muscadet Sevre et Maine Sur Lie, Domaine de la Pepiere
£16.95
Marc Ollivier of Domaine de la Pépière is an example of a winemaker who has grown with his vines. In the early 1980’s Marc, who
was an engineer at the time, decided to move to the country for a slower pace of life. His father owned some vineyards in the cool
Atlantic-influenced zone of Muscadet-Sèvre et Maine but was not a winemaker. Marc took over his father’s vineyards and bought a
parcel called Clos de Briords from an elderly neighbour. Marc’s first vintage was 1985 and his primary goal as a winemaker at the
time was to simply complete fermentation. As such, he began fermentation using cultured yeasts and finished the wine off with a
dose of SO2. As Marc matured as a winemaker, he experimented with ambient yeasts and began bottling with minimal amounts of
SO2. The results were extraordinary; the wines showed greater depth, richness and complexity. Encouraged by his success, Marc
began transitioning all his vineyards to organic and continued his minimalist approach in the winery. His racy, lemon-tinged,
mineral-driven Muscadets have since become the benchmark for the region and have opened up a world of previously unknown
potential in the area. Marc’s success is combination of good fortune (his vineyards were never touched by wine consultants
encouraging new, higher yield clones) and an open minded, experimental approach to making the best possible wines.
Many of Marc’s vines are 40+ years old and some of his vineyards are planted on granite soils, a rarity in the region. All
the vineyards are from original stock: Ollivier is the only grower in the Muscadet who does not have a single clonal selection in his
vineyards. He also hand harvests (a rarity in the region) and uses only natural yeasts for fermentation. Extended lees
contact, often till April or May of the following year, adds added depth to the wines,
The Muscadet from Pepière is an excellent example. The wine is lemony, stony and bracing on the palate.
Excellent with shellfish dishes, especially oysters!
Chateau Bellecroix
£12.95
Château Bellecroix has a long and rich history dating back to the late 1800's. It was purchased in the 1970’s by owner of Château Haut Calens, Albert Yung. Albert has since embarked upon a programme of modernising the entire estate, replanting the vineyards and rebuilding the winery and cellars. Located on the right bank of the Garonne, the clay and gravel soils are ideal for growing Merlot and Cabernet. The 35 acres of vines average 25 years of age and yield healthy, richly flavoured grapes. This wine from the superb 2015 vintage is a blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon. It's a silky-textured, medium bodied Bordeaux with blackcurrants, black cherry, violets and a hint of Cedar box. Finely balanced by lively acidity and smooth tannins.
Great value Claret! Goes with roast beef and lamb of course...
Monbazillac ‘Jour de Fruit’ 37.5cl, Domaine de l’Ancienne Cure
£11.50
Monbazillac has a long history (known as early as the 14th century) and is one of the world’s great sweet wines; similar in style to Sauternes but usually offering better value for money. Here, Christian Roche is one of the best winemakers and his attention to detail and organic practices shine through in the wines.
Light and juicy, with the sweetness balanced by good acidity, this is a great introduction to dessert wines; perfect as an all-rounder with a cheese board or with fruit desserts.
