Burn Cottage Pinot Noir

Burn Cottage refers to the name of the road on which this 28 hectare property sits in Central Otago. The estate was once a sheep paddock until it was purchased by Marquis Sauvage in 2002. Marquis enlisted Ted Lemon of Sonoma Coast’s famous Littorai as their winemaker and together they decided to plant Pinot Noir in 2003.
Six years later, they released their first wine. In order to select the best sites for their Pinot Noir, they dug 60 soil pits and subsequently selected ten clones to plant on five different rootstocks tailored to the different soil profiles. Burn Cottage is distinguished in Central Otago as the first and only estate in the region to have practised biodynamics since day one. This was Ted Lemon’s one stipulation for his involvement. The winemaking at Burn Cottage is best described as ‘minimal intervention’. There is no addition of yeasts or bacteria for fermentations, with minimal sulphur use and no filtration before bottling
Sancerre, Gerard Fiou

This small domaine was one of the first to modernise in the region of Sancerre. The vines are planted on the rocky
silex soils and the resultant wine takes a little time to show its true colours. But when it does, it is impressively pure
and expressive of the flint from which it was born. Give it time to open up in the glass.Very pungent elderflower and gooseberry fruit, but there’s an edge of ripe pear and pear-drop, with a little suggestion
of a more tropical fruit character. Very crisp, clean and racy on the palate with a core of orchard fruits that is very
pure and focused through the mid-palate, with melon and a tangy apple acidity on the finishA great example of Sancerre from a great organic producer.
A perfect partner for British goat's cheese such as Sinodun Hill and Driftwood. Also great with light fish dishes and smoked salmon.
Finca Suarez Chardonnay

The Suarez family connection with Paraje Altamira goes way back. Juanfa Suarez' great grandfather, Leopoldo, bought the finca in 1920 and established an experimental winery for varietal micro-vinifications.
Leopoldo's son started planting in earnest in the 1960s and made good quality bulk wine for the domestic market, but the economic crisis that ensued commoditised wine in a way that made it commercially non-viable and he was forced to plant apples, pears and other fruits instead.
The finca stayed in family hands and Juanfa's father finally returned the land to vines in the 1990s, initially just to sell the grapes. Today, most of the fruit (around 80%) is sold to other producers and Juanfa uses his best plots to make his own wines. His first vintage was 2013 and in a short space of time his wines have emerged as being really rather special.
Simply one of the best Argentine Chardonnays we’ve ever tasted, this stunning, under-stated wine is verging on ethereal. The nose is fresh and delicate with notes of apple blossom, peach and mandarin and just the faintest suggestion of oak. The palate is pristine and precise, tidy and stylish. The amazing fruit quality at Juanfa’s disposal, the complete lack of malolactic fermentation and the fact that only 15% of the wine is aged in French barrels for 12 months, makes for a wine that is simultaneously lean and luscious.

Established in 1973 by Cecil De Loach, a firefighter from San Francisco, De Loach was purchased by Burgundian Jean-Claude Boisset in 2003. His son Jean-Charles Boisset saw the similarities of the Russian River Valley with his native Burgundy and the potential that the region held for producing fine Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. One of his first decisions having acquired the estate was to convert the seven hectares of vineyard surrounding the winery to biodynamic farming.A Californian vineyard with a Burgundian winemaking philosophy. This Pinot Noir has mouth-watering flavours of cherry and strawberry, it is accented beautifully with just a touch of spice and earthiness.Californian Pinot Noir can be eye-wateringly expensive, so this represents outstanding value.
Great with lamb cutlets or roast pork belly.

Te Whare Ra (TWR), pronounced Te Faré Rha (House of the Sun), is the oldest little winery & vineyard in Marlborough, being first established in 1979 in the sub-region of Renwick. Since 2003 it has been owned and operated by Anna & Jason Flowerday. She’s an Aussie from South Australia and he’s a Kiwi from Marlborough.Anna and Jason firmly believe that biodiversity is the key to maintaining a good vineyard. They plant between the vines and plough alternate rows. To combat pests, they use natural methods such as buckwheat, and fertilize the vineyard using their own home-made composts and manure. In the cellar they practice a hands-off approach as they seek to express the nature of their individual vineyards and sites. The TWR wines are truly hand-made. Everything is hand-picked, hand-sorted and the attention to detail is meticulous. Anna and Jason are dedicated to making delicious authentic wines that showcase the very best of Marlborough not the mass-produced version.I love this dry Riesling, it has such purity of fruit; it's light yet focused with complex citrus and herbal aromas.
Richer on the palate, it marries perfectly with dishes with some chilli (and lemongrass).Such a good wine!

Bardolino, Monte del Fra

Monte del Fra is a great family winery based just south of Lake Garda in the Veneto region, north-east Italy.
Run by the Bonomo family since 1958 and now in the hands of brothers Eligio and Claudio, it is one of the most progressive and quality-minded producers in the area.
The Bardolino zone lies to the east of Lake Garda and these once-popular wines have been overshadowed by bigger and more 'impressive' wines of neighbouring Valpolicella. However, this wine shows just how good they can be when care is taken in the vineyards and in the winery - Monte del Fra certainly do that.
An unoaked blend of Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara, this is a delightfully light, juicy and vibrant wine with enormous gluggability! Bags of fresh cherry and strawberry flavours and very light tannins combine to make a wine that is so easy to drink. On hot days it's really good served chilled, straight from the fridge - just watch out you don't drink it too quickly!
Perfect for outdoor drinking, picnics, lunches of cheese and salami, anti-pasti, a mid-week bowl of pasta with tomato sauce, good pizzas...you get the idea.
