The Unexpected Tasting

Join James, Justin, Young Cheesemonger of The Year Lily Morris and Cheesemaker of Stichelton Sabina Schneider on the 23rd of November at 7pm for an awesome tasting.

The team of experts will be tasting one of the finest blue cheeses in the World with an awesome Ice cider. Ice cider also known as Ice Wine or Cidre de Glace in French, sold as Ice Apple Wine in the USA. This is the equivalent of Ice Wine; it is a ferment of the juice from frozen apples. As the sugars are super concentrated it produces a higher alcohol content than regular cider. It is also sweeter and a great alternative to dessert wine.

Recently, James thought it would be a great idea to taste Stichelton with Ice Cider at Chiswick Cheese Market. The tasting formed part of the Tastes of The Unexpected competition held at Chiswick Cheese Market – the largest cheese market in the UK that is held every 3rd Sunday of the month. James competed against expert palates such as Emma Young AKA The Cheese Explorer, Perry Wakeman from Rennet & Rind, Mary Quicke from Quickes Cheddar and others. The audience decided that Stichelton and Ice Cider was the clear winner.

James agreed that as it was such a fabulous match this needed to be shared. Hence, we have brought together one of the finest cheesemakers of blue cheese in the World, Sabina Schneider from Stichelton Dairy, the cheese made here is a thing of legends. It has marmite and brothy candied notes close to the rind, the paste is buttery and fudgy with bolts of blue that deliciously stimulate the palate. Sabina will be joining us on the evening to describe how Stichelton is made and why it tastes so damn good.

Who better to explain the pairing than our guest star Lily Morris the Young Cheesemonger of the Year 2023. Lily competed for the prize at The World Cheese Awards in Norway in front of a huge audience. Alongside industry experts she wowed us all with her knowledge and skill. Lily has been involved in cheese for over 2 years and taken to cheesemongering like a fish to water. She is also a fully trained-up member of The Academy of Cheese. Lily has a very popular Instagram account that shouts out great cheese facts daily. Lily was a truly deserved winner of The Young Cheesemonger of The Year and much liked within the cheese community.

Founder of No2 Pound Street James Grant AKA Bucks Cheese Guy will be co-hosting the virtual tasting. James has liquid cheese running through his veins and is a champion of British Artisan Cheese. This year saw James set up The People’s Choice – a blind cheese tasting of British cheese screened live to thousands along with his friend and host Marcus Brigstocke.

Another host on the night will be Justin Humphris a seriously brilliant cheesemonger from No2 pound Street, who never stops smiling. His enthusiasm for cheese is infectious. He is an important member of the team at No2 and really brings in the Sunshine no matter the weather. His skill as an affineur has seen No2 pound Street go on and win best blue at The Academy of Cheese’s Affineur of The Year Competition.

You will be in very good hands for a tasting experience that will blow your mind!
