Passione Natura use biodynamic grapes and traditional winemaking methods. Intervention is minimal,
pesticides are never used and sulphur only sparingly at bottling.
Most of the grapes come from the hillside where the microclimate is moderately continental. Some grapes are sourced from
growers in the foothills where the climate is cooler.
Yields are low, very low for Montepulciano, grapes are picked by hand and fermented whole bunch in tank with
indigenous yeasts.
This is a lighter style than usual for Montepulciano from Abruzzo, no heavy, toast oak flavours here, just pure dark fruit flavours with just a hint of spice. Deliberately made in this more food-friendly style; juicy, balanced and delicious.
A great pizza wine.

Monteleccio, Sesti
The Sesti family are one of the best producers of Brunello di Montalcino. Based at the beautiful Castello di Argiano, they have the most beautiful property imaginable and they make wines in a thoughtful and balanced style; traditional in the best sense of the word. The grapes for this wine are selected because they are felt to be best for drinking young; so they could become Brunello but they are aged for less time. More character than many actual Brunello and for half the price, this is one of Montalcino’s best buys. Great with hard cheeses (Cornish Kern or Old Winchester?), as well as roast lamb with lots of garlic and rosemary, pasta with meat sauces and stews.
Morgon ‘Corcelette’, Frederic Berne
Delicious Beaujolais from a great, fairly new, producer. Frederic has only been making his own wines since 2013 but is one of the rising stars of this, once-again fashionable areas. Corcelette is one of the best vineyards in Beaujolais and it shows the Gamay grape at its best. The wine is so bright and energetic, it is a real joy to drink; perfect with pates, charcuterie or with a great cheese board – the perfect wine for us!
Fleurie, Didier Desvignes
Didier Desvignes is a winemaker who really epitomises the spirit of Beaujolais; he believes in treating the land with respect and nurturing each vineyard parcel to express its full potential. Everything is done by hand and farmed using organic treatments. The Gamay vines he has in Fleurie are on unique pink granite soils and make a wine of great purity and vibrancy. There are vivid aromas of violets and flavours of crushed wild strawberries and a herbal, savoury edge which makes it so good with charcuterie. You could be in a Paris wine bar, sipping natural wine and enjoying fine charcuterie, or you could be doing exactly the same at No2 Pound Street!
Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, Cataldi Madonna – Organic
One of Abruzzo’s top producers, Cataldi Madonna makes wines with great balance; the grapes and vineyards are allowed to express themselves without layers of oak. This Montepulciano is refreshingly medium-bodied, deliciously palatable and very moreish. It will complement your meal rather than dominate it – a quality I always look for in great wine.
Great with charcuterie, herby lamb, meaty pasta dishes and hard sheep cheeses such as Spenwood.
Zinfandel ‘Heritage’, De Loach
De Loach was founded in 1973 by San Francisco Firefighter Cecil De Loach. The estate was later taken over by Burgundian Jean-Charles Boisset, who has converted all their vineyards to organic and bodynamic practices.
This wine is unusual in that it presents great Californian wine at a sensible price, usually there is the mass-produced stuff at the bottom end of the market and then a big jump to the premium £30+ end. This is a great wine at a great price. Medium/full-bodied with loads of juicy bramble fruit and smooth, velvety tannins. A crowd-pleaser and a great pizza or BBQ wine.
Gran Passione Rosso, Veneto, Italy
Made from partially dried Corvina and Merlot grapes in the Veneto region of North-East Italy, this wine certainly delivers a lot of ‘bang for your buck’! Like a baby Amarone, this has buckets of rich, intense dark fruit flavours with a long, lingering. Very smooth and very comforting… great with hearty dishes, especially game and perfect with strong cheeses such as Vintage Lincolnshire Poacher and Stilton from Cropwell Bishop.
Piceno ‘Bacchus’, Ciu Ciu
From the Marche region of central Italy, Ciu Ciu is a lovely organic producer who make really characterful wines at a great price. This blend of Sangiovese and Montepulciano is rich, intense and juicy and a great wine to have at hand to accompany everyday Italian dishes – pasta and meat sauces and pizza!
