‘Babone’, Muralia
£19.95
Chiara and Stefano Casali, the hosts, fell in love with all this in 1997, and turned this love into the adventure of their lives, with the clear idea of making a wine that would simply interpret the gifts of the land.
This fully organic winery produces great wines! All very well made and balanced with food in mind. Hand made, artisan wines at sensible prices.
Blending Sangiovese with Syrah is a trend that is really taking hold in Tuscany, with many top estates in Chianti and Montalcino producing interesting results. The Babone shows why this blend works, Sangiovese gives that lovely spicy cherry flavour and the Syrah adds a bit more dark fruit depth.
Obviously this wine goes very well with steaks and roasts but also meaty pasta sauces and hard, strong cheeses.

Valpolicella, Alpha-Zeta
Alpha Zeta was started in 1999 to produce a range of modern, fruit-driven wines from the hills outside Verona. Leading New Zealand winemaker Matt Thomson works with growers (rather than buy bulk wine, which is standard among most wines from Verona at this price) to obtain ripe grapes (by reducing yields and picking later) and then, using Matt’s expertise, preserve these flavours in the finished wines. This has resulted in wines that offer great value, quality, balance and typicity.
The Valpolicella has bright, black cherry fruit and velvety tannins; a delicious wine that is perfect with pizza and light pasta dishes.
