Pascal Verhaeghe of Chateau de Cedre has been the driving force behind the Cahors “Quality Charter” and quality oozes from these wines.
The estate was originally created by Charles Verhaeghe on vineyard land devastated by the frosts in 1956 in Viré-Sur-Lot.
His sons Pascal and Jean-Marc duly studied winemaking, the former in Burgundy and California, the latter in
Bordeaux. Ecological viticultural methods eschewing weedkillers and chemical fertilizers, yield reduction by serious
pruning, leaf stripping for greater sun exposure and air circulation, harvesting the grapes on the verge of overripeness
yield the superb raw material essential to create fabulous wines.
In the cellars the Verhaeghes aim for softness, richness and harmony through gentle extraction by long vattings and limited pigeage, malolactic fermentation and sensible use of oak.

The Heritage du Cèdre is the Pugsley in this Addams menagerie. The family traits of abundant dark brooding fruit are evident; the heart is black but the flesh is youthful. Its lunchtime and you could murder a Cahors, but you don’t fancy taking out one of the big guns. Heritage is for you, a bonny ruby-red, the Malbec softened
by plummy Merlot soothing to the gullet.

Great with sausages, in fact, any grilled red meat!

Charlie Melton was one of the first to recognise the value and tradition of the Barossa Valley’s old-vine Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvèdre (Mataro). While others were grubbing up Shiraz to plant more fashionable varieties, Charlie and a small band of Barossa winemakers were convincing farmers to keep their historic vineyards. These wines were initially styled on those from the Rhône, but are now considered leading examples in their own right.Since 1984, Charlie has produced premium Barossa red wines which have wonderful balance and freshness, with the use of French oak giving them a supple texture and poise. The grapes are dry-grown, chemical free and harvested from the winery’s own vineyards in Tanunda and Lyndoch. The estate vineyards now comprise 32 hectares, the oldest planted in 1947 and the balance planted from the late 1960s onwards. The estate vineyards are supplemented by other growers with whom Charlie has worked for a number of years. The oldest grower block dates from the 1880s, with numerous vines ranging between 70 and 100 years old.This wine is deep red in colour with a hint of an amber edge. The nose is intense with ripe red fruit flavours intermingled with sweet spice and salted caramel. Beautifully balanced with a plump mouthfeel and soft tannins, it culminates in a long savoury finish.One of Australia's most iconic wines, this has a quality that really makes it stand out from the crowd. One of my all-time favourites. A big wine that can stand up to big flavours as well as being perfect with big meat dishes.

Ataraxia was founded by Kevin and Hanli Grant in 2004 near the coastal village of Hermanus in the Hemel-en Arde region.Hemel-en-Aarde is Afrikaans for “heaven and earth” and the claim is justified. The estate sits on a particularly heavenly stretch of land beneath a lofty peak of the Babylon’s Tower mountain range. In addition to its unrelenting beauty, Ataraxia is home to some of the most spectacular terroirs South Africa has to offer.Almost two decades on, they are associated with crafting wines of incredible finesse, balance and depth; wines that proudly hold their own on the international wine stage.This Pinot Noir is my favourite discovery of the year! Perhaps my favourite wine in our range! The wine has the perfect balance of rich fruit and light structure alongside the most gorgeous perfume.A stunning wine, that pairs perfectly with soft, mould-ripened cheeses such as Baron Bigod.

The quality of this second growth estate has improved markedly since the mid 1980s. The location is just to the north of the village of Sauternes on gravelly hillside beds with a southwest orientation. Yields are low (about 15hl/ha) and the blend is Sémillon (55%), Sauvignon (40%) and Muscadelle (5%). This high proportion of Sauvignon and the refusal to use any new oak (the wine is aged in stainless steel and 5+yr old oak barrels for 24-36 months) gives Filhot a fruitier, more aromatic quality than some of the bigger-boned Sauternes. That said, the bottle age here gives real depth of flavour and considerable complexity.Delicious with classic French desserts such as Tarte Tatin, as well as the perfect match for Blue Sheep's milk cheeses such as Lanark Blue, Beenleigh Blue or Mrs Bell's Blue.

Te Whare Ra (TWR), pronounced Te Faré Rha (House of the Sun), is the oldest little winery & vineyard in Marlborough, being first established in 1979 in the sub-region of Renwick. Since 2003 it has been owned and operated by Anna & Jason Flowerday. She’s an Aussie from South Australia and he’s a Kiwi from Marlborough.Anna and Jason firmly believe that biodiversity is the key to maintaining a good vineyard. They plant between the vines and plough alternate rows. To combat pests, they use natural methods such as buckwheat, and fertilize the vineyard using their own home-made composts and manure. In the cellar they practice a hands-off approach as they seek to express the nature of their individual vineyards and sites. The TWR wines are truly hand-made. Everything is hand-picked, hand-sorted and the attention to detail is meticulous. Anna and Jason are dedicated to making delicious authentic wines that showcase the very best of Marlborough not the mass-produced version.I love this dry Riesling, it has such purity of fruit; it's light yet focused with complex citrus and herbal aromas. Richer on the palate, it marries perfectly with dishes with some chilli (and lemongrass).Such a good wine!

Bardolino, Monte del Fra

Monte del Fra is a great family winery based just south of Lake Garda in the Veneto region, north-east Italy. Run by the Bonomo family since 1958 and now in the hands of brothers Eligio and Claudio, it is one of the most progressive and quality-minded producers in the area. The Bardolino zone lies to the east of Lake Garda and these once-popular wines have been overshadowed by bigger and more 'impressive' wines of neighbouring Valpolicella. However, this wine shows just how good they can be when care is taken in the vineyards and in the winery - Monte del Fra certainly do that. An unoaked blend of Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara, this is a delightfully light, juicy and vibrant wine with enormous gluggability! Bags of fresh cherry and strawberry flavours and very light tannins combine to make a wine that is so easy to drink. On hot days it's really good served chilled, straight from the fridge - just watch out you don't drink it too quickly! Perfect for outdoor drinking, picnics, lunches of cheese and salami, anti-pasti, a mid-week bowl of pasta with tomato sauce, good pizzas...you get the idea.

Grecanico Dorato, Mandrarossa, Sicily

The Mandrarossa wines come from a selection of the best sites from Cantine Settesoli’s 6,000 hectares of vineyard, situated in southwestern Sicily and planted with 32 different grape varieties. The vineyards are split between the 2,000 members of the co-op, and cover the area around Selinunte, the hauntingly beautiful ruins of a Greek town founded 2,600 years ago. Cantine Settesoli helps to support the restoration of this archaeological site.

First produced in 1999, Mandrarossa has opened its own winery in 2021, a completely sustainable winery fed by solar panels and well integrated with the surrounding hills. The winery has increasingly focused on single-site wines, as it was conceived after the diverse soils of the vineyards were mapped, enabling the winemakers to focus on what were then ranked their best sites.

The nose is complex, with notes of orange blossom and citrus fruit with a hint of thyme. The palate is fresh and zesty with good minerality and great finish.A great salad/garden wine, light fish dishes, garlicky prawns etc...

This is a family run winery, in the heart of Redondo, in the Alentejo region, with a deep love and understanding of the viticultural heritage of their region. Alexandre Relvas started in 1997, and his two sons Alexandre Jr and António now run the show, ably supported by Head Winemaker Nuno Franco. Herdade São Miguel is the original, flagship estate which comprises 35 Ha of vineyard as well as Cork forest and olive groves and a heathy flock of Merino sheep.A blend that changes slightly each year, the last few vintages of this wine have been on fire. Beautifully defined dark fruit (there always seems to be a generous lick of cassis in this wine, even when the Cabernet component is actually quite modest), just a frame of toasty oak (although that roasted Alentejo character amalgamates with that too), and just enough Alicante crunch to keep it all fresh and energetic.Older vintages are still drinking well, and with the improvements in this great value wine, there's no reason more recent vintages won't last even longer.A great wine for a hearty roast or BBQ.
