Rubillo, Principe Pallavicini
£14.95
The history of the Pallavicini family, which has owned land in the Lazio region for hundreds of years, is entwined with that of popes, cardinals, generals and princes. The winery is built over a Roman cistern and aqueduct and Roman artefacts and remains can be found everywhere on the estate. They are one of the best producers around Rome, and make wines which are balanced and delicious.
This Rubillo is made from the local Cesanese grape, which produces a fairly light wine which is eminently gluggable. A little bit like Valpolicella in style, this is perfect for pairing with tomato dishes and charcuterie; a great lunchtime wine which can benefit from chilling in the summer months.

Monteleccio, Sesti
£21.00
The Sesti family are one of the best producers of Brunello di Montalcino. Based at the beautiful Castello di Argiano, they have the most beautiful property imaginable and they make wines in a thoughtful and balanced style; traditional in the best sense of the word. The grapes for this wine are selected because they are felt to be best for drinking young; so they could become Brunello but they are aged for less time. More character than many actual Brunello and for half the price, this is one of Montalcino’s best buys. Great with hard cheeses (Cornish Kern or Old Winchester?), as well as roast lamb with lots of garlic and rosemary, pasta with meat sauces and stews.
Merlot 006, Aniello
£18.50
A beautifully ripe and pure Merlot from Patagonia in the south of Argentina.
Aniello are one of the rising stars of Argentinian wine and are showing that Patagonia can produce World class wines. This has all the rich, ripe, plummy fruit you would want from a good Merlot, with a long smooth finish.
Really well-made; a good all-rounder and a safe bet for a gift.
Soave Classico, Monte Tondo, Veneto, Italy
£15.95
Beautiful, elegant Soave from a great, family-run, organic estate in the volcanic hills of Veneto. The grape variety here is Garganega, and this is an expression with great precision of flavour. Unoaked, light and elegant, it is a very versatile food wine; a great match for all light pasta dishes, salads or simply grilled fish.

Ortonese Sangiovese/Merlot, Caldora
£10.95
This is one of my favourite sub £10 wines out there; it's such a great wine for the price.
From Puglia in the hot south of Italy, this blend really punches above its weight. The perfume and freshness of the Sangiovese meld beautifully with the soft, rich, plummy fruit of the Merlot.
Easy drinking and versatile, this is perfect as an every day red to accompany pasta and tomato dishes, pizza, as well as cured meats and hard cheeses (English Pecorino!). Smooth enough to work brilliantly at parties and functions (a step up from most wedding wines...)
