Tolpuddle Chardonnay 2020
£62.00
The Tolpuddle Vineyard was purchased by Michael Hill Smith MW and Martin Shaw in 2011. First planted in 1988 by Tony Jordan and Garry Crittenden with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, it has since established a reputation for growing exceptional quality grapes. The vineyard took its name from the Tolpuddle Martyrs, who were transported to Australia in 1834 for starting an agrarian union. The leader of the group, George Loveless, served part of his sentence working on a property near Richmond called GlenAyr, part of which is now the Tolpuddle Vineyard. On the nose, this wine is intensely aromatic with lemon peel, white blossom, wet stone and a captivating struck match note. Notes of mandarin, white peach and biscuit are complemented by mouthwatering fresh acidity. There is intensity but also plenty of texture and verve, as well as a long finish. Some stunning Chardonnay is coming out of Tasmania, and this is at the top of the tree. Very elegant and perfectly balanced. Deserves the finest fish or bird dishes.
Ataraxia Pinot Noir
£35.95
Ataraxia was founded by Kevin and Hanli Grant in 2004 near the coastal village of Hermanus in the Hemel-en Arde region.Hemel-en-Aarde is Afrikaans for “heaven and earth” and the claim is justified. The estate sits on a particularly heavenly stretch of land beneath a lofty peak of the Babylon’s Tower mountain range. In addition to its unrelenting beauty, Ataraxia is home to some of the most spectacular terroirs South Africa has to offer.Almost two decades on, they are associated with crafting wines of incredible finesse, balance and depth; wines that proudly hold their own on the international wine stage. This Pinot Noir is my favourite discovery of the year! Perhaps my favourite wine in our range!
The wine has the perfect balance of rich fruit and light structure alongside the most gorgeous perfume.A stunning wine, that pairs perfectly with soft, mould-ripened cheeses such as Baron Bigod.
‘Calvarino’ Soave Classico, Pieropan
£24.95
Pieropan’s estate covers 58 hectares of vineyard which are situated on the stony hills of Soave Classico. The Pieropan family has been producing wines in Soave since the 1890s. Indeed, they were the first producer to bottle a wine with the name Soave on the label in the early 1930s. Nino Pieropan took over from his father in 1970 and was the first producer to make a single-vineyard Soave, ‘Calvarino’, in 1971. Nino’s two sons, Andrea and Dario, took over the running of the estate in 2017 when Nino fell ill and before he passed away in April 2018. From the 2015 vintage onwards, all Pieropan wines are certified organic. The first single-vineyard wine produced in Soave in 1971, Calvarino is the name of a steep vineyard (200 to 300 m asl) in the Classico Soave area. The 30-60 year old Garganega and Trebbiano vines are grown organically on basalt-based soils. This has always been one of my favourite Italian wines; the purity and elegance really shines through, with a subtle richness which compliments the fish dishes. This wine with simple grilled fish and really good olive oil is my idea of heaven.
Jester Cabernet Sauvignon, Mitolo
£16.95
McLaren Vale-based Mitolo is a family-owned winery established in 1999 by Frank Mitolo, whose Italian roots inspired his early interest in, and enthusiasm for, good food and great wine. Winemaker Ben Glaetzer became a partner in the business in 2001. The fusion of Frank’s knowledge of the land and business acumen with Ben’s winemaking talent has resulted in Mitolo becoming one of Australia’s most awarded wineries. Mitolo has made a name for itself as one of the Australian producers to watch. The Jester Cabernet Sauvignon uses grapes that were dried for about five weeks after harvesting. This period of ‘appassimento’ gives the wine a dried fruit yet vibrant character that ensures its intensity is nicely balanced. A seriously impressive wine for the price.Intense and rich, this is a good wine to cope with all the flavours a bbq has to offer, especially a big chargrilled ribeye!

Mas La Chevaliere Pinot Noir
Mas La Chevalière was established near Béziers in 1995 by superstar Chablis producer Michel Laroche, after a 10 year search for the right vineyards. This Pinot Noir is bright ruby red in colour. On the nose, it displays ripe cherry and strawberry aromas. The bright palate combines juicy fruit with supple, velvety tannins.Great value for Pinot Noir. Great with roast chicken and pork.
Herdade Sao Miguel Tinto
This is a family run winery, in the heart of Redondo, in the Alentejo region, with a deep love and understanding of the viticultural heritage of their region. Alexandre Relvas started in 1997, and his two sons Alexandre Jr and António now run the show, ably supported by Head Winemaker Nuno Franco.
Herdade São Miguel is the original, flagship estate which comprises 35 Ha of vineyard as well as Cork forest and olive groves and a heathy flock of Merino sheep.A blend that changes slightly each year, the last few vintages of this wine have been on fire. Beautifully defined dark fruit (there always seems to be a generous lick of cassis in this wine, even when the Cabernet component is actually quite modest), just a frame of toasty oak (although that roasted Alentejo character amalgamates with that too), and just enough Alicante crunch to keep it all fresh and energetic.Older vintages are still drinking well, and with the improvements in this great value wine, there's no reason more recent vintages won't last even longer.A great wine for a hearty roast or BBQ.
