Family Vineyards Pinot Noir, Newton Johnson
£34.95
This family farm was founded in the mid-1990s by Cape Wine Master, Dave Johnson and his wife, Felicity (Née Newton) and within the past twenty years has built a reputation for producing some of the Cape’s best Pinot Noir. Dave’s CWM thesis was on the variety. Add to that one of South Africa’s smartest Chardonnay’s and, more recently a pair of outstanding Rhône style wines. Right from the outset, Dave and Felicity’s offspring were involved and today it is very much Gordon, partnered by his wife, Nadia, who are responsible for the winemaking, with brother Bevan looking after the commercial side.
This is always my favourite South African Pinot Noir, it just has beautiful purity of fruit and perfect balance; some richness but with bright and juicy acidity. It never fails to deliver. This will age and improve for up to 10 years but is delicious now.
One of the New World's best and for a wine of this quality, the price is incredible (compare to Burgundy or California!)
Great with roast lamb or pork, grilled chops, fillet steak, venison...any special meal!
Big Flower Merlot, Botanica Wines
£21.95
Really good Merlot from Ginny Povall at Botanica Wines, one of South Africa’s most respected boutique wineries. Plummy and smooth (as you would expect) but with an extra juicy dimension (called ‘deliciousness’?) that makes it stand out and makes you want to drink more of it!
A really good all-rounder, and like all Ginny’s wines, it has a lovely pretty label, so great for gifts.
St. Chinian ‘La Laouzil’, Thierry Navarre
£18.95
Carignan/Grenache/Syrah
Thierry Navarre has a dozen hectares of vines planted on dark brown schist terraces around Roquebrun. The achingly beautiful countryside is an amphitheatre of small mountains clad in a sea of green, a forest of small trees and bushes and the familiar clumps of fragrant rosemary and thyme which captures the scented spirit of the high Languedoc. The culture in the vines revolves around the respect for the soil, the cycles, the seasons. No chemical products are used, simply composting, natural preparation, plant infusions and working the soil. The harvest is manual and carried out by a small team.
This wine is full of red fruits, liquorice tones and plenty of herbs and spice, yet is unforced, supple and fresh.
A proper southern French wine to accompany roast lamb or great with some good sausages or a hearty stew.
Valencay, Sebastien Vaillant
£14.95
This has long been one of our most popular wines, a delicious blend of Sauvignon Blanc with a dash of Chardonnay. The Chardonnay adds a lovely texture and a tiny bit of weight to the wine but it still retains that classic Loire Sauvignon character. Sebastian Vaillant is a great winemaker and this is a great value alternative to the neighbouring wines of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fume.
Raza, Quinta da Raza, Vinho Verde
£13.95
This Vinho Verde (northern Portugal), has always been one of our most popular wines.
Quinta da Raza is a fifth generation family winery that makes some of the most expressive wines in the region.
This wine is a blend of Arinto, Azal & Trajadura and is probably the most refreshing wine on our list. The wine is bottled young and retains a little spritz which when drunk cold on a hot day really hits the spot!
Perfect summer wine for the garden or picnics (11.5% abv) and great with salads and grilled shellfish. You will need more than one bottle of this...
Organic Macabeo, Castano, Yecla
£12.95
This is a great value certified organic wine from the Castano family in South East Spain. This Macabeo (known as Viura further north in Spain and Macabeu in France) is a lovely light, fresh wine with good depth of citrus flavours. A versatile food wine with enough flavour to stand up to some spice but also delicious on it’s own!
Monbazillac ‘Jour de Fruit’ 37.5cl, Domaine de l’Ancienne Cure
£11.50
Monbazillac has a long history (known as early as the 14th century) and is one of the world’s great sweet wines; similar in style to Sauternes but usually offering better value for money. Here, Christian Roche is one of the best winemakers and his attention to detail and organic practices shine through in the wines.
Light and juicy, with the sweetness balanced by good acidity, this is a great introduction to dessert wines; perfect as an all-rounder with a cheese board or with fruit desserts.
Cropwell Bishop Organic Stilton 200g
£6.95
Cropwell Bishop Organic Stilton is the 'king' of blue cheese and surprisingly Cropwell Bishop is still the only Stilton maker to produce a certified organic Stilton. The organic cows' milk gives a mellow flavour with the same strong blue veins expected in any Stilton. Â It is rich and masterful, what is not to love! Like all Cropwell Bishop Stiltons their organic Stilton is matured for 12 weeks. Delicious at Christmas, but in our view a stunning Stilton for any time of the year.
Enjoy with a delicious port, see recommendations below.
