‘Segna de Cor’, Domaine le Roc des Anges
£19.95
Deep in the Roussillon countryside, close to the Spanish border, Marjorie Gallet makes some truly wonderful wines. The Vineyards have very poor crumbly schist soils which encourage the very old vines to form deep root systems. All the work here is done organically and by hand and the result of this care and attention to detail is plain to see here. Segna de Cor (blood of the Earth) is a blend of Grenache, Carignan & Syrah which really expresses the land it comes from; you can imagine being in the wild, rocky vineyards, breathing in the aromas of wild herbs and then imagine a spit roast lamb with rosemary and thyme. Meaty, rich and delicious. Proper wine!

Charles Heidsieck Brut Reserve NV
£52.00
Charles Heidsieck is one of the great names of Champagne and produces some of the finest of all champagnes. Founded in 1851 by Charles-Camille Heidsieck, the original 'Champagne Charlie', the foundation of its modern fame rests on the unrivalled quality of its wines, which receive countless awards and accolades year after year.
The grapes for the Brut Réserve are sourced from 60 different ‘crus’ across the region; fermentation and ageing of the base wines takes place primarily in stainless steel to preserve freshness; it is a blend of 40% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir and 20% Meunier, including at least 40% reserve wines, the average age of which is 10 years; and finally, the Brut Réserve is aged in bottle on its lees for at least three years prior to release.
This really is one of the best NV wines coming out of Champagne! Beautiful.
Botanica Pinot Noir, Botanica Wines
£25.95
Botanica Wines was founded in 2009 by owner and self-taught winemaker Ginny Povall, an intrepid American who fell in love with the beautiful Cape winelands She purchased Protea Heights Farm in Stellenbosch’s Devon Valley and relocated to the southern tip of Africa. Established in the late 1940s, Protea Heights was the first farm in South Africa to cultivate indigenous protea flowers commercially. Inspired by this horticultural history, it was only natural that Ginny would choose to develop her wine brands and labels with a botanical flair.
It was a real joy when Ginny visited us last year, to share her wines with us and our customers at the shop; her warmth and humour really come through in her winemaking, giving them real personality.
This small production Pinot Noir is considered one of South Africa’s best; lovely perfume and that perfect balance between fruitiness and elegance.
Alvarinho ‘Granit’, Soalheiro, Vinho Verde
£23.95
100% Alvarinho (same as Albarino over the border in Spain)
Qunita do Soalheiro are the benchmark producer of Alvarinho. Based in the Vinho Verde region, their wines are a league above other producers; more elegant and complex. This particular bottling, named 'Granit' after the soils in this vineyard, is my favourite; a rich, complex expression of the grape with a lovely mineral texture and a very long, pure finish.
A little bit similar to really good 1er Cru Chablis, this is perfect with things like grilled white fish with lemon and olive oil or shellfish (lobster salad would be sublime).
Something a bit different but truly World class. You won't be disappointed.
Big Flower Merlot, Botanica Wines
£21.95
Really good Merlot from Ginny Povall at Botanica Wines, one of South Africa’s most respected boutique wineries. Plummy and smooth (as you would expect) but with an extra juicy dimension (called ‘deliciousness’?) that makes it stand out and makes you want to drink more of it!
A really good all-rounder, and like all Ginny’s wines, it has a lovely pretty label, so great for gifts.
‘Hecula’ Monastrell, Castano, Yecla
£12.50
Based in Yecla, Familia Castaño is known for its huge efforts to promote one of Spain’s native varieties: Monastrell. Castaño embodies the best of what southern Spain has to offer, producing rich, warm-climate wines, with almost Syrah-like complexity, which overdeliver in terms of value year after year. Castaño began bottling characterful, single-varietal Monastrell in the 1980s, when the variety was used exclusively for bulk wines and blending. Today, in the expert hands of Daniel Castaño and his family, the variety maintains high quality even at moderate to generous yields. 80% of the family’s 600 hectares of vineyards are dedicated to Monastrell, with smaller plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Macabeo and Chardonnay among others.
This is a big, rich, full-bodied wine made from the Monastrell grape in the Yecla region of south west Spain. Really over-delivers for the price; so tasty! Has always been one of our favourites, and now it's certified organic! Win Win
A great steak wine, but also just one of the best all-round wines on the market. Seriously good.
Monbazillac ‘Jour de Fruit’ 37.5cl, Domaine de l’Ancienne Cure
£11.50
Monbazillac has a long history (known as early as the 14th century) and is one of the world’s great sweet wines; similar in style to Sauternes but usually offering better value for money. Here, Christian Roche is one of the best winemakers and his attention to detail and organic practices shine through in the wines.
Light and juicy, with the sweetness balanced by good acidity, this is a great introduction to dessert wines; perfect as an all-rounder with a cheese board or with fruit desserts.
Cropwell Bishop Organic Stilton 200g
£6.95
Cropwell Bishop Organic Stilton is the 'king' of blue cheese and surprisingly Cropwell Bishop is still the only Stilton maker to produce a certified organic Stilton. The organic cows' milk gives a mellow flavour with the same strong blue veins expected in any Stilton. Â It is rich and masterful, what is not to love! Like all Cropwell Bishop Stiltons their organic Stilton is matured for 12 weeks. Delicious at Christmas, but in our view a stunning Stilton for any time of the year.
Enjoy with a delicious port, see recommendations below.
