Chenin Blanc, Botanica
£24.95
This is one of South Africa’s best white wines! Awarded the maximum 5 stars in the influential Platter Guide for seven vintages. The dry-farmed grapes for this wine come from a vineyard in the Citrusdal Mountain region. It is fermented and aged partially in old oak barrels and has the perfect balance between richness and freshness that only great Chenin Blanc seems to achieve. Amazingly complex and will continue to develop for many years to come. Outstanding.

Amarone, Musella
£49.95
Musella make very special wines! What makes them unique is that they look for harmony and balance in the wine, not just power and intensity. Don't get me wrong, this is still a full-bodied wine, made with dried grapes in the usual way, but it isn't too intense or too alcoholic like a lot of modern Amarone. This is deliciously drinkable; more than one glass won't knock you out! Maddalena Pasqua is passionate about her vineyards and the land on which she lives; she makes wines that shine with this love. All the vineyards and farmed Biodynamically and the wines made by hand.
A great wine to finish the meal and can accompany a range of cheeses including complex Cheddars such as Montgomery or Pitchfork, or soft blues like Beauvale.
Saint-Veran ‘Tradition’, Domaine des Deux Roches
£23.95
This domaine is based in the village of Davayé, in the Mâconnais, and is jointly owned by Jean-Luc Terrier and Christian Collovray. Their 50 hectares of vineyards largely lie between the twin escarpments of Solutré and Vergisson and showcase the diverse terroirs of this region. The wines of Deux Roches are known for their drinkability and offer great value for money; the domaine is particularly known for its excellent Saint-Véran.
The cuvée Tradition emits a floral scent reminiscent of honeysuckle and acacia flowers. Pear, green apple, peach and apricot, are all well-integrated on the palate and reinforced by creamy notes, and a long floral finish.
Versatile with food but particularly good with roast chicken.

‘La Magendia’ Jurancon Moelleux (37.5cl), Clos Lapeyre
£15.95
Jean-Bernard Larrieu makes some of the best wines in Jurancon at Clos Lapeyre. This isolated area lies inland in the foothills of the Pyranees and is home to some of the best sweet wines France has to offer (without paying Sauternes prices). Petit Manseng is the main grape for producing these delicious, honeyed wines and it's bright acidity is what makes it so successful; no matter how rich and unctuous the wine, it still feels fresh and mouth-watering on the finish. In case you were wondering, La Magendia means 'the best' in the local Occitane dialect; very fitting, as this is truly stunning.
Perfect with fruit desserts (rhubarb or apple crumble...?) and is a star with blue and rind-washed cheeses.
Valencay, Sebastien Vaillant
£14.95
This has long been one of our most popular wines, a delicious blend of Sauvignon Blanc with a dash of Chardonnay. The Chardonnay adds a lovely texture and a tiny bit of weight to the wine but it still retains that classic Loire Sauvignon character. Sebastian Vaillant is a great winemaker and this is a great value alternative to the neighbouring wines of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fume.
Le Carillon de Vendome, Cave Co-op du Vendomois
£14.95
The Vendomois region is located along the banks of the river Loir (a tributary of the Loire proper) to the north of Touraine.
This Co-operative makes great value wines and this Chenin Blanc is a great example. It comes from a single vineyard and has all the lovely Chenin qualities of food-friendliness and complexity.
A great wine for fish pie or fish and chips!
Cropwell Bishop Organic Stilton 200g
£6.95
Cropwell Bishop Organic Stilton is the 'king' of blue cheese and surprisingly Cropwell Bishop is still the only Stilton maker to produce a certified organic Stilton. The organic cows' milk gives a mellow flavour with the same strong blue veins expected in any Stilton. It is rich and masterful, what is not to love! Like all Cropwell Bishop Stiltons their organic Stilton is matured for 12 weeks. Delicious at Christmas, but in our view a stunning Stilton for any time of the year.
Enjoy with a delicious port, see recommendations below.
